Just as readily as they dish out criticisms and
put downs, the people of Northern Ireland will give fair credit to anyone in the community who is a genuinely good
person. Or at least these quaint expressions were intended as compliments -
"She has a heart of corn."
"He's a civil auld craithur."
"She's a tarbil dacent woman."
ANY COMPLIMENT ABOUT YOUR APPEARANCE
FROM AN ULSTERMAN SHOULD BE CAREFULLY EXAMINED FOR TRACES OF SARCASM.
"My hand on yer hat!"
"She
would give you the bite out of her mouth ."
"He wouldn't pass you."
"I never once heard him turn his
tongue on his father or mother."
